5 questions with Morgue Ann le Slayer
Amy Hamlet is a mother of two, a nursing school student, a Taylor Mill resident - and a rollergirl known as Morgue Ann le Slayer. The 32-year-old is part of the Black-n-Bluegrass Rollergirls, a Northern Kentucky roller derby league. The women-only, heavy-contact competitive skating has found a resurgence since the 1970s when the flat-track leagues were big. And part of the fun is picking your name, an alter-ego that always has a tough-as-nails connotation. How did you pick your name? The first night after practice I spent three hours researching a name. Morgan le Fay came to mind, and then I thought I would change it to "Morgan le Fate." But I wanted a harder edge, so I went with "Slayer."
What are some of the best names you've heard? Ophelia Agony is a great one. I also like the name of founder Trudy Grit - I just like the way that sounds. It's hard to pick just one ... Picking a name has to be original and it can't be similar to anyone else's in the league. If it is, you have to get approval from (whoever has that name). How did you get involved with the Black-n-Bluegrass Rollergirls? I saw a flyer in MainStrasse, and I started going to practices. July 17 will be my one-year anniversary. I now co-own the league with Doris Danger and am the league manager. It's been great. I wasn't expecting all the new relationships and all the fun. What do you like most? The athleticism and pushing yourself to get better. I played a lot of different sports growing up, and in this one, I keep going back for more. I also like the camaraderie. Any major injuries? I think the worst for me was a sprained ankle. I chipped part of the bone and was off skates for about two weeks. Other than that, just a few bruises. Nothing major. Want to join the Rollergirls? Visit the Independence Skateway from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. the first Sunday of every month. Hit the road with the Rollergirls for their first bout, Aug. 4 in Bloomington, Ind. Cost is $30 per ticket.
